Background and Organization of TGGS and MPE Program

The Sirindhorn International Thai-German Graduate School of Engineering (TGGS) provides industry-oriented graduate engineering education and research in Thailand based on the RWTH Aachen university educational model. It is public private partnership venture for engineering education, technology development and research collaboration.

Materials and Production Engineering (MPE) program has been developed to meet the industrial needs through practical training in industries or manufacturing enterprises, which are one of the main educational philosophies. This program will cover into 3 majors;

a) Process and Manufacturing Technology,

b) Metallurgical and Material processing technology and

c) Production Engineering and Logistics.

Originally, this distinctive academic program was collaborated with the Department of Ferrous Metallurgy (Institutfür Eisenhüttenkunde; IEHK) and other research institutes at RWTH Aachen University. In addition to providing regular block lectures at MPE, the professors from five research institutes also co-supervise students in the student project and the research thesis. To make an effective communications and collaborations between MPE and IEHK, the MPE program is coordinated by two coordinators: one on Thai-side and another on German-side.The successful communication between MPE and IEHK has been established since 2009. All the issues related to the organization, collaborations, or other activities are discussed during the IEHK-MPE monthly meeting. Because an IEHK professor is generally very busy. In practice, the MPE German coordinator usually appoints one of his research support staff to be the assistant in coordinating all activities between IEHK and MPE and also other IEHK professors.

Moreover, we have also the MOU with some universities in the other countries such as University of Brescia in Italy, University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. In the future we also plan to have more collaboration with other universities as well.

Vision-Mission of MPE program

The formulation of ELOs of the MPE program is primarily guided by the vision-mission of TGGS which are to become “a leading international graduate school of engineering for industrial research” and “to educate engineering graduates for industrial needs with international standards”. While that of the MPE program is to provide “an advanced education to increase an understanding and competence in Materials and Production Engineering” and “to create master level engineers not only with abilities in knowledge application, but also skills in research and development”.Both Vision-Mission of TGGS and MPE program are corresponded with the vision-mission of KMUTNB as shown in Table
